… while my wife and I were in Cornwall for the wedding of some friends of ours. A beautiful day, bright sunshine, you may remember it!
The service was held in Camborne Church – but the wedding reception was at the Eden Project (quite a venue!) some 40 minutes drive by car. Now I don’t know how well you know the back lanes of Cornwall, but I think it’s fair to say that some villages and small towns are quite remote.
Imagine our surprise when on the outskirts of the village of Bugle, some 15 minutes from Eden, we hit a major traffic jam. A crash perhaps? Families playing in the streets?
And then it hit us… The Torch Relay: heading in the opposite direction. At dawn that morning, Ben Ainslie had kicked things off at Land’s End – and we’d watched events unfold in Falmouth on the TV. But slowly it danwed on us that we’d actually see the Torch… by mistake!
Sure enough, after multiple buses, police cars, outriders and a fair dose of hangers-on, a yellow flicker appeared around the corner… But since we were on the outskirts of the village, we hopped out our cars in an eerie silence – and as the torchbearer went by, accompanied by the grey tracksuits, all we could hear was the faint waft of cheering from distant crowds and the hiss of the gas from within the torch.
Fabulous.
Bring on the Games!
