Two people in the professional speaking business for whom I have huge admiration include: Graham Jones (2011 President of the UK Professional Speakers Association) and Darren LaCroix (2001 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking).
When it comes to business development, both have similar advice to offer:
1. Identify the people with whom you wish to do business.
2. Find out where they gather.
3. Go there!
Today, the penultimate day of the JCI World Congress in Osaka, I had lunch with two Germans and a Norwegian; participated in training with two ladies from the Philippines; observed an experienced American trainer in action; applauded as the President of JCI Mali received an award; and liaised with new Japanese friends to schedule a speaking engagement in Kobe for Monday night.
As a speaker who specialises in helping young professionals develop the skills to achieve greater personal impact, JCI international conferences seem like an obvious place for me to spend time! Whether it’s in a training session, at a social event or in the lunch queue, you just can’t help but ‘bump into’ intriguing people at an event like this.
Put simply, that’s why I decided to attend the Osaka Congress.
With whom do you wish to do business?
Where do they gather?
Most importantly, when will you go??
