The 2022 Oscars will be forever known as the ceremony at which #willsmith hit Chris Rock.

The trigger?

A "joke" made by the comedian concerning Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her haircut. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disorder which causes hair loss. (Link to video clip of the Oscars incident in Comments below).

People will have their own view on whether Will Smith "should" have done what he did.

What's more interesting is whether Chris Rock should have.

Rock claimed his joke was not about Pinkett Smith personally.

"It was a G.I. Jane joke!" he exclaimed.

Judging by her facial reaction, I'm not sure Pinkett Smith saw it that way.

Will Smith certainly didn't.

#communication is not about what you say.

It's about what your listeners think you said.

I've seen politicians play hide-and-seek following blatant dog whistle comms in the same way.

Unimpressive.

As for introducing someone's name, well then it's ALWAYS personal.

In so doing, tread on another person's suffering?

Well, then you're skating on very thin ice indeed.

The school is at the start of an ambitious and exciting journey. You have helped us set the standard for the remainder of the year and further ahead. I hope you will return to the school in the future and inspire subsequent cohorts of MPP students.
